Can Vitamin Deficiency Cause Hair Loss?

As people get older, they may notice that their hair is not as thick as it used to be, and start their searching journey to find a cure for hair loss… During that search, hundreds of medicines were tried by people around the world to strengthen and thicken their hair. In fact, hair thinning and abnormal hair loss may be linked to vitamin and minerals deficiencies.

The human body needs certain types of minerals and vitamins to function properly. Iron, Zinc, Vitamin A, D, E, B7 (Biotin) deficiencies are directly linked to hair loss causes and other serious health issues.

Vitamin A: This vitamin strengthens your immune and reproductive system, vision, bones, teeth, kidneys, and lungs. If your body lacks vitamin A, you need to follow a diet based on leafy vegetables, fruits, eggs, dairy products, fish, and yellow fruit, such as papaya and mango.

Vitamin D: Stimulates the hair follicles and assists in maintaining the thickness of the strands. Many vegetarians suffer from vitamin D deficiency since its primary food sources are: Red meat, liver, and fish. Increasing your time in the sun also helps maintain a good amount of vitamin D in your body, but make sure you wear sunscreen!

Vitamin E: This vitamin is a primary nutrient for the blood. It helps reduce the oxidative stress in your scalp. Meat, dairy, leafy greens, cereals, almonds, peanuts, olive oil, and margarine are highly rich in Vitamin E.

Vitamin B7 (Biotin): Biotin is a water-soluble vitamin. It is produced by specific bacteria in the body. This vitamin stimulates keratin production in the hair and increases the rate of follicle growth. It is present in numerous foods like baker's yeast, wheat bran, whole eggs, oysters, fish, meat, seeds, nuts, and certain vegetables. Vitamin B7 deficiency is extremely rare and is caused most of the time by a lack of biotin in the parent's diet during pregnancy. Biotin deficiency can lead to hair loss and skin rashes.
